How do you know if you have car insurance?
How can I check if I am insured on my car? I don’t remember if my premium was set for six months or 12 months. I want to make sure my policy is still active.

If you don’t know if you have car insurance, here’s how to check:
- Look at your car’s registration paperwork: One way to see if you have an active insurance policy is to check your registration. In many states, the registration will outline your provider and your account number.
- Ask the DMV for help: Many states require insurance providers to keep close contact with DMVs in order to update changes to a customer’s policy. So, if you don’t remember who your current insurance provider is, your local DMV can likely provide assistance.
- Request a new insurance quote: When you get anew quote, agents can run a search to find your current insurer, see if your policy is active, determine when it expires, and let you know if there was a lapse in your coverage.
- Check your declaration page: You should have a copy of yourdeclaration pageoutlining your policy. If you don’t have a paper copy but have an online account on your insurer’s website, it should be accessible there. Look through it to check your coverage term.
