How do you insure a learner driver on your car?

Is there any way to put a learner driver on your car insurance? My son is learning to drive and I need to make sure he’s covered when he practices in my car.

“When it comes to insuring learner drivers on your car you have a few different options:
  • If your son is using the family car he may not need insurance. Since you gave him permission to use the car, he’d be covered by your policy under permissive use. But before you call it a day, you should ask your provider about their policy on permissive use.
  • You could put them on your policy, but not every provider will offer coverage for learner drivers. Plus, having a teen driver on your insurance will cause a significant increase in your monthly insurance rate.
  • Your final option would be to buy your son his own policy. However, this will likely be more expensive than adding him to your insurance.
At the end of the day, insurance for teen drivers will always be expensive. To find the best rates you can, you should compare quotes from at least three different insurance companies and ask each provider about their discounts.
