I have a metal garage that I am transforming into a secondary living space. I’ll need to insulate it to keep it warm. How do you insulate an existing metal building?

Installing insulation in your metal garage is one of the first steps to making it habitable. Here’s how to insulate an existing metal building:
  • Measure the walls, ceiling, and floor area
  • Remove existing internal wall sheathing
  • Cover the walls with two-inch layers of closed-cell spray foam and allow to dry between coats
  • Repeat the above step and apply spray foam to the ceiling
  • Remove flooring to install foam boards between joists
  • Reinstall sheathing and flooring
Installing your insulation yourself can be a great way to cut costs, but only if it is done correctly. Be sure to consult a professional if you are uncertain about insulating your metal garage.
