How do you handle a car accident without insurance?

I don’t have car insurance, but I live in New Hampshire where it’s not illegal to drive without it. What do I do if I get in an accident?

While New Hampshire doesn’t have mandatory insurance laws, it is risky to be driving around without insurance.
New Hampshire is an
at-fault state
. This means if someone decides you were at fault all the financial burden falls on you. This can put you out thousands of dollars, especially if you’re found to be at fault in a major accident and are paying for property damage and medical bills.
Dealing with a small fender bender without going through insurance is possible, but if you go this route make sure you keep very clear records of the incident. Notate the following at the time of the accident:
  • The other driver’s name
  • Their phone number
  • Their address
  • Their driver’s license number
  • The license plate number
  • Take photos of the damage to both cars
  • Take photos of anything that might’ve led to the accident
Contact the police and be sure to get a copy of the police record. You want to get this information because you need to make sure you have a paper trail and are covered. If you decide to settle, make sure it’s with a legally binding document, and you should never agree to anything verbally. It’s best to have someone else help you look over everything if possible.
Talk to mechanics to get quotes for the damages. Usually, you want about three estimates to figure out how much it’ll cost for both vehicles.
With all that said, it’s still smart to have insurance to protect you on the road. If the price of insurance is what’s holding you back, or the amount of paperwork involved you should try the
Jerry
app. Jerry will take care of all the paperwork and phone calls for you. The best part? Average Jerry users save $879 per year on car insurance.
