How do you get a car dealer license in GA?

My friends came to me with a great business idea: we should open a car dealership. My buddy’s got the know-how for sales, but neither of us has started a business. What do you need to do to get a car dealer license in Georgia?

Car dealerships
can be great business ventures if run properly. If you’re ready to start one, then all you need to do is follow these steps to get a dealer license in
Georgia
:
  • Step 1: Decide which license you need. You can either get a used auto dealer license or a new auto dealer license (which lets you sell used and new cars).
  • Step 2: Complete a pre-licensing seminar. The only requirement is a four-hour lecture.
  • Step 3: Find a location. You’ll need to submit photographic proof of your physical location, along with a working telephone number and sign.
  • Step 4: Apply for a sales tax number. You can do this online by providing your personal and business information.
  • Step 5: Provide proof of liability insurance.
  • Step 5: Get an auto dealer bond. The Secretary of State requires a $20,000 surety bond.
  • Step 6: Get fingerprinted. Your application needs to include the $24 fingerprinting fee and two fingerprint cards.
  • Step 7: Submit a dealer application. You can find the application on the Secretary of State’s website. You’ll need to include all the information from above in your application.
Once you finish this list, all you need to do is wait for approval to get started! Once you have an inventory, remember to get everything insured. If not, you’ll need to pay for damages on any unsold and uninsured car out of pocket!
