How do you fix your car's seat upholstery?

I bought a used car for a great price. But the passenger’s seat has a massive tear in the cloth upholstery. What’s the best way for me to fix the upholstery?

Congrats on the new car! When you get a good deal on a car, you shouldn’t let upholstery damage stop you. There are plenty of easy fixes that you can do from home! But remember, the repair method depends on the size of the tear.
If the tear is small:
  • Buy a curved knitting needle and thread that matches the color of the upholstery.
  • Practice on some spare fabric until you feel comfortable stitching the hole.
  • Once you feel ready, stitch the tear.
  • Spray the area with fabric sealant to prevent further tearing.
Larger rips usually require patching. Luckily, you can make it easy with these steps:
  • Buy fabric adhesive and fabric that matches the color and texture of your cloth seats.
  • Cut a piece of fabric adhesive and adhere it under the tear with the sticky side facing up.
  • Cut a square patch of fabric slightly larger than the hole itself.
  • Place the fabric over the top of the hole and press it into the adhesive.
  • Follow the instructions on the adhesive’s packaging to permanently attach the fabric and adhesive.
If you followed those steps, your car should look good as new! But if the hole is too large for DIY repairs, bring it to a professional. Reupholstering shouldn’t be too pricey if it’s just a single seat.
