How do you fix problems with your car's heater?

The heat isn't working in my car and the weather is starting to change. I live in Boston and I don't want to be freezing in the driver's seat this winter! Is there any way for me to fix my car's heating system?

“A broken heater is never fun! However, getting it fixed is only a trip to a mechanic or auto repair shop away.
Common issues can stem from:
  • A leak causing low antifreeze or coolant levels
  • A bad thermostat
  • A blower fan that isn’t working properly
  • Contaminated coolant preventing the circulation of air
If you’re familiar with cars, you may be able to try and diagnose some of these issues yourself. Generally speaking, though, your local mechanic is much more likely to have the necessary tools to fix up the heating system. Try taking your vehicle to a repair shop to get an estimate of the work needed—that way, you can figure out how much it might be if you’re paying out of pocket.
Repairs can be expensive, so if you’re looking to save money, it might be good to compare a few different
