How do you fix car speakers?

My radio turns on, but the sound won’t work. I have a two-hour morning commute that I drive alone, so this is actually a big deal for me! What’s the best way for me to fix my car speakers?

Answer
Car speakers are a core part of the driving experience. Without them, driving is the same as sitting in silence! Luckily, you can fix your speaker once you know what’s wrong with it. The most common speaker problems include:
  • Broken voice coil
  • Displaced voice coil
  • Torn diaphragm
Fixing these problems is relatively straightforward once you identify them. But the first step to any fix is locating and removing the speaker like so:
  • Disconnect the negative terminal from your car battery.
  • Remove the speaker cables.
  • Unscrew the speaker and remove it from the car.
From there, inspect the speaker by:
  • Gently pressing the speaker cone to make sure it moves freely.
  • Checking under the cone to make sure the voice coil and connections are in good shape.
  • Searching the diaphragm for tears.
If the coil is displaced, you can simply push it back into its spot, but you **can’t easily repair broken voice coils. So, you’ll need to replace it if it’s broken by:
  • Cutting the speaker’s gasket to reach the coil.
  • Removing the old coil and removing the wire connections.
  • Inserting a new coil and soldering it to the electrical connectors.
  • Sticking the diaphragm back to the speaker with glue.
If the diaphragm’s torn, you can fix it by sticking a single ply of paper to the torn area with an all-purpose adhesive. But if the diaphragm is beyond repair, you’ll need to replace it using the same steps you used to replace the coil.
If electrical problems are the issue, you may want to leave it to a professional.
