- Prep the area by masking off any area unaffected by rust
- Remove the rust using a wire brush wheel
- Use 80-grit sandpaper on any remaining rusty areas, then smooth it over with 150-grit sandpaper
- Wash off any dust and sediment
- Paint any exposed metal using a rust preventative primer
