How do you fix a rust hole on your car?

My car has a small rust hole on the wheel well, and I want to fix it before I pass the car on to my son, who just got his license. I don’t want to spend a lot of money at a body shop—can I fix a small rust hole on my car so that it looks nice again?

First of all, congrats to your son on getting his license! It’s pretty cool that you are passing on the family car to get him started with driving.
You can repair a small rust hole by sanding down the area, patching the hole with a fiberglass filler, and then sanding and painting over it.
  • First, sand down all the paint within two inches of the rust hole.
  • Remove all the rust using a grinder or tin snips and treat the area with a rust protector.
  • Use the round edge of a ball-peen hammer to tap down any sharp edges.
  • Mix and apply a fiberglass filler to the hole, following the instructions for your particular product.
  • Sand the area down and use a paint touch-up kit to make it match the rest of the car.
If you see
small rust spots
that aren’t holes yet, you can take care of those at the same time.
When rust has gone through the body of your car to create a hole, there may be more damage to your car’s mechanical components. Make sure you have it inspected during your next routine maintenance check.
Now that we have the car taken care of, let’s talk about your new driver. Adding a new driver to your insurance policy raises the cost of your insurance—and, if you are getting a new car to replace the one you are giving him, that raises the price even more.
