How do you fix a rubber seal around a car window?

What can I do to fix the rubber seal around my car window? It’s falling apart and starting to leak. I already tried to glue it back in place, but it won’t stay no matter what I do.

Oh no! To fix the rubber seal around your car’s window and prevent any water damage, you’ll need to replace it.
Rubber window seals tend to shrink
over time when exposed to the elements
, so that’s likely why the old one won’t stay in place with adhesive. To replace the rubber seal, follow these steps:
  • First, remove the old seal. Open your windows and use a flathead screwdriver to remove the seal. Be careful when you do this, as old rubber tends to break apart fairly easily.
  • Get rid of any residual glue left behind on your window with a product like Goo Gone or WD-40.
  • Sand the metal surface with fine grit sandpaper to ensure that the rubber sticks properly. Be sure to sand the rubber seal only, or you might do damage to your paint job.
  • Now, cut the new rubber to fit the window. Once you have the rubber measured, apply an adhesive to the sanded surface. You can ask your local auto store which adhesive would work best for your vehicle.
  • Wait for five to 10 minutes until the adhesive is slightly hard, then press the rubber into the window. Don’t stretch it, but don’t leave any gaps, either!
