How do you fix a loose race car?

I’ve spent the last couple of years repairing an old race car. While I’ve done all the maintenance and tuning myself, the car’s steering has been feeling loose. I’m not sure what needs to be done. How can you fix a loose feeling race car?

That sounds like quite an exciting hobby, and it’s awesome you’ve been doing all the maintenance yourself!
The loose feeling you’re describing is oversteer, meaning the car likely has poor rear traction. Your race car probably tends to fishtail towards the wall.
There are a few reasons your car might be handling this way, but to fix a loose race car, you should:
  • Check the rear alignment and service it as necessary.
  • Modify or adjust the shocks and suspension of your vehicle.
  • Adjust the brakes and brake bias.
  • Adjust the tire pressures.
If you aren’t comfortable performing the maintenance yourself, you should consult a mechanic or someone with more experience to address the issue. The last thing you want to do is make it worse.
Finally, I’m sure your race car hobby isn’t cheap, but you can make the costs a bit more manageable by using
