How do you fix a hole in your brake line?

I’m wondering how to fix a hole in your brake line. I saw something leaking under my truck, and it turns out there’s a small crack in the metal brake line itself. Can I fix this myself? Can this be patched somehow?

A leak in your
brake
line can be extremely dangerous both for you and other people driving near you.
First off, you cannot patch brake lines long-term. Using something like Rescue Tape works as a very short-term and temporary fix that gets you to the nearest
mechanic
, but only if it’s a minor leak and there’s enough fluid left to get you there.
Otherwise, the only way to fix a hole in a brake line is to fully remove and replace that segment of the brake line.
Brake lines consist of custom-fitted metal pipes that need to be cut, bent, and flared correctly. You can buy pre-made brake lines and flaring tools and cut them to suit your needs, but this is not a project for beginners to attempt.
Replacing brake lines consists of:
  • Accurately measuring the old brake lines that need replacing
  • Custom-cutting, bending, and flaring new lines
  • Removing the old lines and installing new ones
  • Properly refilling your brake fluid and bleeding the brake lines
Again, these are not DIY projects for beginners. You may want to take the car to a mechanic and have it fixed by professionals. Fixing a hole in a brake line will typically cost around $200 to $500, depending on what the mechanic charges for labor. It’s a bit expensive, but you can’t put a price on safety.
