How do you fix a cracked windshield yourself with rubbing alcohol?

When I was driving home from work today a small stone cracked my windshield—it’s not major, but I don’t want it to get worse. I’ve heard that rubbing alcohol can be used as a temporary fix. How do you fix a cracked windshield yourself with rubbing alcohol?

Sorry to hear that! Rubbing alcohol can be used—in conjunction with a few other household items—to temporarily fix a cracked windshield, but the results aren’t always positive. Your best bet would be to purchase a windshield repair kit or at the very least cover the crack with clear packing tape.
But if you’re set on using rubbing alcohol, you’ll need to gather a few other things first, namely bug spray, salt, and water. Once you have those items, follow these steps:
  1. Fill a small bowl with one to two cups of water.
  2. Add two to three spoonfuls of salt.
  3. Pour a small amount of bug spray into the mixture.
  4. Add a few spoonfuls of rubbing alcohol.
  5. Mix the solution together with a small paintbrush.
  6. Apply a thin layer of the solution directly to the crack.
  7. Allow two hours for drying.
Remember: this is not a permanent fix but a temporary one—you should still purchase a windshield repair kit to avoid allowing the crack to worsen over time.
Dealing with a cracked windshield can be frustrating, but shopping for car insurance shouldn’t have to be.
