How do you fix a car’s alternator?

My car’s alternator needs to be changed, but the price tag of getting it done by a mechanic is a little steep for me right now. I have some mechanical know-how and I’m pretty comfortable under the hood. How can I fix my car’s alternator?

Changing a car’s alternator is not like changing a tire or adding wiper fluid. It will require some skill, knowledge, and familiarity with car mechanics. That said, if you feel comfortable making car repairs, you can change your alternator in just nine steps.
Before you begin, you’ll need the following tools to get the job done:
  • A new alternator
  • Belt tensioner
  • Basic hand tools
  • Voltmeter
  • Replacement serpentine belt
  • Rags
  • Gloves
Once you have your tools:
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Loosen the belt tensioner.
  3. Loosen and remove the serpentine belt.
  4. Remove the wiring harness or connectors.
  5. Loosen and remove the alternator.
  6. Install the new alternator, making sure it fits and aligns with the bolt holes.
  7. Put your replacement belt on.
  8. Make sure the tension on the belt is correct.
  9. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
This process should take about two hours if you’re working on your own but will vary depending on your mechanic capabilities and knowledge. Always be sure to take proper safety precautions when doing your own car repairs.
If this process seems too complicated, a mechanic is the best option. You can request a quote from a
