Congratulations on your move to Colorado
! You can purchase a stacker system to fit three kayaks on a car. In fact, you can actually fit up to four kayaks on top of everything from an SUV to a mid-size sedan with a stacker system, such as those manufactured by Thule or Yakima. But you can also do it with pool noodles (to protect your paint job) and ratchet straps or rope.
If you choose a stacker system, just follow the instructions provided. If you choose noodles and rope, secure two pool noodles to the top of your car at least a foot apart. Then, you can either stack all kayaks on their sides facing the same direction, or lay two right sides up with the third on top.
Secure your kayaks with rope or straps from side to side and from the tether points at the front and back of each kayak to the front and rear undercarriage of your car. If you use ratchet straps, be sure to pull them just tight enough to keep everything secure. If you tighten them too much, you could damage the hull of your kayak.
