How do you find out who a car is insured with?

Is there an easy way to find out who a car is insured with? Someone hit my car the other day, and I think he gave me a fake name. I did get his license plate number, but I don’t know what to do with it.

It can be really frustrating when the other driver in an accident is uncooperative. Luckily, there are a few ways you can find out about another person’s insurance information:
  • Contact the police. With a license plate number, they’ll be able to pull up the owner’s policy information. But you’ll need to file an incident report and provide them with a verifiable reason for requesting the information before they give it to you.
  • Visit the DMV. You can request another person’s policy information from the DMV but you’ll need to provide your personal details and the reason for your request. They may also deny your request if your information is inaccurate or outdated.
  • Contact your insurance provider. The best way to deal with a situation like this is to contact your insurance company. With a license plate number, they’ll be able to look up the other driver’s policy and file a claim. You won’t need to do a thing! Remember, this is what you pay them for—so let them handle it.
