How do you engage 4WD in a Toyota Hilux?

I bit the bullet and paid the 25% Chicken Tax to import a Toyota Hilux into the United States. And I’m so happy I did! The vehicle is incredibly fun to drive. I haven’t figured out all of its features yet, though. How do you properly engage 4WD in a Toyota Hilux?

Congratulations on being one of the few owners of a
Toyota Hilux
in the United States! The process to engage 4WD in a Toyota Hilux varies depending on the type of shift.
Before explaining how to engage 4WD, you should know that understanding how to select and shift into the correct gear can be a bit challenging, so you should read the owner’s manual carefully to avoid damaging your vehicle.
In general, if you want to shift from:
  • H2 to H4 or L2 to L4: Turn the control switch and make sure you’re traveling below 62 mph. If you have a manual transmission, there’s no need to depress the clutch.
  • H4 to L4 or L4 to H4: With an automatic transmission, you need to stop, put the car neutral, and then turn the control switch. For a manual transmission, you need to be traveling at or below 2 mph and turn the control switch while depressing the clutch.
Finally, if you want to save some money and help offset the Chicken Tax, you should use
