How do you clean mold off a car seat?

As a freshman in college, I cannot have a car on campus. So I keep mine stored safely in my parents’ garage. When I came home for summer break, I noticed some mold growing on the passenger seat. I need to get rid of it, but I’m not sure where to start. How do you clean mold off a car seat?

Congratulations on finishing your freshman year!
Having mold in your car can cause an unpleasant smell and is dangerous to your health. Fortunately, getting rid of the mold isn’t complicated, and you just need some simple supplies that your parents likely have lying around.
Before you begin cleaning, gather the following supplies:
  • Vacuum
  • White distilled vinegar
  • Clean spray bottle
  • Scrub brush
  • Mask
Once you have the supplies, follow these steps:
  • Move your car into direct sunlight and open all the doors to clear out any spores in the air
  • Put on your mask to avoid inhaling any harmful particles
  • Remove any trash or personal belongings
  • Inspect the interior to locate the areas you must clean and use the scrub brush to break up any large clusters of mold
  • Vacuum the interior
  • Fill the spray bottle with vinegar saturate the affected areas thoroughly
  • Work the vinegar into the affected areas using the scrub brush
  • Apply more vinegar as needed
  • Leave the doors open and let the surfaces completely dry
  • If you aren’t a fan of the smell of vinegar, don’t worry, it should dissipate once dry
