How do you claim rental car insurance?

This is my first time driving a rental car, and I’m worried about getting into an accident and how that process would work. I got rental car insurance just to be safe, of course, but in the event of an accident, how do I make a claim on rental car insurance?

Being worried about an accident in your rental car is totally understandable. To claim rental car insurance, get in contact with your rental car company, report the accident and ask the company how to proceed. Typically, they will have you fill out an incident report which will consist of:
  • the make, year, model, and color of every car involved in the accident, plus any standout details about any of the cars.
  • the exact location of the collision, including street names and which lane the accident occurred in.
  • how the accident happened.
Next, get in contact with your own insurance company and
file a claim
through them. Even in the case of an accident with a rental car, your existing car insurance policy will act as your primary coverage. Any rental car insurance will act as secondary coverage and will go into effect after your primary coverage has been established. Generally, your rental car insurance can reimburse you for your
auto insurance deductible
and take care of any extra days you may have to keep the car while it is being repaired.
If your deductible is very high, you still run the risk of having to pay out of pocket, and while taking on a higher deductible can save you money on your premium, in events like this you can take a large financial hit. A better way to save money on car insurance is by shopping with the

app. We’ll get you personalized quotes from top insurers, so that all you need to do is pick the plan that works best for you. And once you pick one, we’ll help you switch over!
