How do you check the coolant level of a BMW?

I’ve noticed the temperature gauge in my car has been reading higher than usual and getting closer to the red zone. I’m guessing it just needs some more coolant. What’s the best way to check the coolant level in a BMW?

An overheating engine is a major sign that your
BMW
needs coolant, and fortunately, checking the coolant level is easy, usually taking less than half an hour.
To check the coolant level in your BMW:
  1. Park your vehicle on level ground and let the engine cool for about 30 minutes.
  2. Open the hood
and locate the coolant reservoir. In most BMWs, the reservoir is to the left of the engine. You can also consult the owner’s manual for a reference photo.
  3. Slowly turn the cap counterclockwise to relieve any excess pressure.
  4. Check the fluid level using the floating device in the reservoir and the instructions stamped on the side. In general, the top of the floating device will stick out about one inch from the reservoir when full. It’ll sit level with the cap if it is near empty.
  5. Add coolant as necessary, making sure it is BMW approved and mixed with water if required. The owner’s manual and coolant bottle will have more information.
If the coolant level is sufficient or you don’t feel comfortable adding coolant yourself, you should visit a mechanic and have the vehicle serviced professionally.
