How do you check if a person has car insurance?

If I get into an accident and don't get insurance info at the scene, how can I check if the person has car insurance?

If you can’t get insurance information at the scene of the accident, be sure to file a police report in order to get that information after the fact.
Here are your options:
  • Ask the police to pull insurance information for you. They can do this as long as you have the license plate number of the other vehicle and an open incident report.
  • Ask the DMV. They can provide you with this information if you give them a valid reason for the request. Since driver information, including car insurance, is protected under privacy laws, they’ll ask you to prove your request with the police report.
  • Contact the other driver after the accident. If you can get the other driver’s contact information at the scene of the accident, you can ask them to send you their insurance information after the fact.
