How do you check if a car has insurance?

I was in an accident yesterday, but the other driver and I didn’t exchange information. How do I check to see if they have car insurance?

We’re sorry to hear you were in an accident, and we hope you are okay. There’s good news and bad news if you’re trying to find out if the other driver has car insurance. The bad news is that about 13% of drivers in the United States are
uninsured
, despite it being a requirement in most states for drivers to have car insurance.
The good news is that you can generally contact the police to request information about the other driver’s insurance if there was a police report filed and you have a valid reason to do so—like an accident. You also can check with your local DMV, provided you have proof of your involvement, the other party’s license plate number, and a copy of the police report.
As a final option, contact your own insurance company if the other driver is at fault and you cannot find them. It’s a good idea to consider uninsured motorist coverage in case you are in a situation like this again. This type of coverage will protect you in case you are hit by an at-fault driver who doesn’t have insurance.
Thankfully, you can find this coverage, as well as other types of car insurance, by searching for a policy with the
Jerry
app. Jerry is a licensed broker that offers end-to-end support by gathering affordable quotes and helping you switch plans. It will even help you cancel your old policy.
