How do you charge an electric car in the Netherlands?

My sister is traveling abroad this fall and is probably headed to the Netherlands—she hasn’t decided yet. Anyways, she plans on renting an electric car to drive herself around, but she’s completely unfamiliar with the country and its EV rules. How can she charge an electric car in the Netherlands?

One of the unique things about the Netherlands is that some of its cities require a personal charging pass in order to use many of the public electric car charging ports. So, if you’re wondering how to charge an
electric car in the Netherlands
, that’s probably one of the first things that your sister is going to need to get. As far as actually charging the vehicle, it’s a pretty simple process.
Unlike many of the charging laws in the U.S., specifically those in
California
, there’s no time limit for how long your vehicle or e-bike can sit on the charger, as long as you have your pass. There is a difference in charging speed, as we have here in the U.S.—so if she’s looking to get back on the road more quickly, that’s a factor. Most of them have a pay rate of about $.30/kilowatt, which is fairly standard.
As with other countries, the amount of charging ports available depends on where your sister decides to venture. If she’s out in the countryside enjoying the windmills and tulips, she needs to ensure she’ll be close enough to a port in order to recharge for the drive back.
When she returns home, you could even suggest that she download the

app to save money on her car insurance premiums here in the U.S. With the amount she could save, she might even be able to travel abroad again even sooner than she expected.
