“Switching to a new policy will usually require some work on your part, but it’s great that you want to find the insurance that’s right for you. Here’s what to do:
  • Consider your options
  • Do some research
  • Talk to your insurer
  • Avoid a gap in coverage
  • Switch your cards
Every insurance company is different, so you’ll want to consider your options. Get quotes from multiple insurers to make sure you’re getting the best price and policy for you.
Coverage types, deductibles, and limits will vary. Read through your existing policy and potential new policy carefully to see what you’ll gain (or lose) in the switch.
Before choosing a new provider, do some research. Read online reviews of your new company. Price is important, but so is service quality. If you see a lot of negative reviews, it might be best to look elsewhere.
You’ll also want to make sure that the coverage at the new company is what you expected. If you’re losing coverage by switching, make sure that the benefits of the switch outweigh the losses.
Some insurance companies will offer price matching services or
discounts
if you tell them that you want to switch. So it’s worth it to talk to your insurer before bailing.
If you still want to cancel, be sure to ask about any fees or refunds that are associated with cancellation.
A word of caution: the last thing you want is a gap in your insurance coverage. This can lead to higher rates at your new insurance company. And if you total your car during the gap, you won’t have coverage. So set your old policy’s expiration and your new policy’s start date for the same day.
Once you start your new policy, you’ll need to swap out any old insurance ID cards for new ones. Your proof of insurance can be digital (unless you happen to live in New Mexico), so you can probably download a digital ID card to keep on your phone or computer.
