How do you change the spark plugs on a 2005 Hyundai Santa Fe?

The engine in my Santa Fe was idling pretty roughly, and then it decided to not start this morning. I looked that stuff up and it seems like it’s an issue with the spark plugs. How do I replace the spark plugs on my 2005 Hyundai Santa Fe?

It does sound like you need new spark plugs, and if you’re up for the task, you can save money by doing the switch at home.
To change the spark plugs on a 2005
Hyundai
Santa Fe, you’ll need:
  • 10mm socket
  • 12mm socket
  • spark plug socket
  • ratchet wrench with long and short extensions
  • adjustable wrench
  • Philips head screwdriver
  • flat head screwdriver
  • pliers
  • metal crush gasket
  • new surge tank gasket
  • platinum-tipped spark plugs (number based on if you have a 6-cyl or 4-cyl)
  • dielectric grease
Look up part numbers in your owner’s manual to find the exact matches. When you’re ready, do the following:
  • Disconnect the battery
  • Unbolt and remove the engine cover
  • Remove front plugs
  • Use dielectric grease on the new spark plugs and install them
  • Remove throttle cable bracket bolts
  • Remove vacuum hose and vacuum solenoid
  • Remove final two bolts from main throttle cable bracket
  • Remove the three rear plenum tie-down bolts
  • Unclamp the black rubber intake hose
  • Remove hose from PCV valve
  • Remove nuts and bolts holding the plenum and lift plenum off studs
  • Cover the intake manifold so nothing drops into the engine
  • Tilt and brace the plenum to hold it at a 45-degree angle
  • Remove and replace rear spark plugs
  • Reinstall all parts in reverse order
Whew! Done! If your engine troubles were spark-plug-related, they should be solved now.
