How do you change the spark plugs in a Ford F-150 4.2L engine?

My engine keeps misfiring. I’m pretty sure it’s because of a problem with the spark plugs. From what I understand, it’s pointless to repair a spark plug, so I’d like to replace them. What’s the best way to change the spark plugs in my Ford F-150 4.2L engine?

Spark plugs are an essential part of your engine, so changing them is a vital piece of
basic car maintenance
. That said, it costs between $230 and $280 to have a professional fix it. Considering the difficulty of the task, it may be a worthwhile investment.
But if you want to try and change the spark plugs yourself, follow these steps:
  • Start by purchasing your new spark plugs. You can typically find suggested models in your owner’s manual.
  • Next,
    open your hood
and locate the spark plugs—they should be at the top of your cylinder head.
  • Unplug the wires attached to the spark plugs and leave them close to the spots you pulled them from. You’ll need to be careful not to mix them up when you reattach them.
  • Starting from your driver’s side, use a ratchet and socket to loosen the spark plugs and unscrew them.
  • As you remove each plug, replace it with a new one. Use your ratchet to tighten them as much as possible.
  • Once they’re replaced, reattach the wires you pulled before—making sure each wire is connected with its corresponding spark plug.
  • Close your hood and test your car.
Hopefully, those steps can help you change your spark plugs! Remember, it isn’t easy to change your spark plugs. It should take at least a half-hour and that’s if you’re experienced. If you’d prefer to hire a mechanic—go for it! You can even offset the price by saving on car insurance with
