How do you change the power steering fluid in a Honda?

How can I change the power steering fluid in my Honda? My buddy says I need to do it, but I can’t take my car to the shop until my next paycheck.

Doing
car maintenance
yourself is a great way to preserve the well-being of your car and save some money. For this particular job, you’ll need a drip pan, a hose, and a little patience.
Here’s what you’ll need to do to change the power steering fluid in your Honda:
  • Open the hood
of your car and find the power steering reservoir. In most Honda models, it will be on the passenger side of the engine. If you have trouble finding it, you can check your owner’s manual for the exact location.
  • Lift the power steering reservoir so that it is the highest point in your power steering system. This will prevent extra fluid from spilling out when you disconnect the black return hose.
  • Using a flathead screwdriver, remove the clamp and disconnect the return hose from the side of the power steering reservoir.
  • Now, grab a second, slightly larger hose and place one end into a bucket or drip pan for the old power steering fluid, and connect the other end to the disconnected return hose.
  • When your hoses are all connected, start your Honda and move the steering wheel from side-to-side until there is no more fluid coming out of the hose.
  • Once your hose stops dripping into your pan or bucket, turn off your engine and disconnect the hoses.
  • Reconnect the return hose to the reservoir.
  • At this point, you can refill the reservoir with new power steering fluid. Make sure the fluid reaches the indicator line on the side of the reservoir.
  • Finally, turn on your car and let it idle for about 10 minutes and, once again, turn your wheel from side to side two or three times. This will help to dislodge any air that has gotten into the system during the process. You may also have to add more fluid once you’ve done this.
Congratulations! You’ve just changed the power steering fluid in your Honda.
