How do you change the battery on a 2011 Toyota RAV4 key fob?

Up until now, I’ve had zero issues with my RAV4. But yesterday, I tried to use the key remote to unlock the doors and it wouldn’t work. I’m fairly certain the fob has a dead battery. How do I change the key fob battery on a 2011 Toyota RAV4?

A faulty key fob isn’t usually a cause for concern, but it’s definitely an annoyance. Most key fob batteries last about three to four years, so if you haven’t replaced the battery in that timeframe, it’s probably the culprit.
To change the battery on a 2011
Toyota RAV4
key fob, follow these simple steps:
  • Use a butter knife or another thin object to pry apart the key fob from the top.
  • The circuitry housing in the middle should pop out.
  • After you remove the circuitry housing, pry apart the battery housing.
  • Then, use a pen tip (or the same thin object) to carefully remove the battery, taking care not to break the tabs that hold it in place.
  • Replace the old battery with a fresh CR2016 battery. Most of these batteries come in two-packs that will set you back about $3.
  • Snap the housing back together and then put the entire key fob together. Lastly, test it.
If this doesn’t fix the issue with your key fob, you may have to replace it. Since this key fob is an older model, it will probably be cheap! Typically, you can find one for about $35 to $50.
Since you’ve taken a few minutes to replace the battery in your RAV4 key fob, why not take a few extra minutes to save hundreds of dollars on your car insurance using the
