Learning how to do basic car maintenance yourself is certainly an invaluable skill! To change the automatic transmission fluid in a
Toyota Corolla
, follow these steps:
  1. Park your car on level ground. If you’d like, you can also
place your car on jack stands
to make it easier to access the transmission fluid drain pan.
  2. Under your hood, locate the transmission fluid filler tube and remove the dipstick. Replace it with a funnel.
  3. Place a drip pan beneath the transmission fluid drain pan, then use a socket wrench to remove the drain plug.
  4. Allow the old transmission fluid to drain into the pan.
  5. Using your socket wrench, carefully remove the bolts holding the fluid pan in place.
  6. After you remove the fluid pan, remove the bolts holding the strainer in place. Then, carefully remove the strainer as well.
  7. Drain any additional fluid, then clean the fluid pan and strainer before replacing them in their original positions. Be sure to replace the drain plug, as well.
  8. Now, it’s time to add more fluid. Carefully, pour new transmission fluid into the funnel that you placed in the filler tube, checking the level with your dipstick as you go.
  9. Once you’ve filled up the transmission fluid reservoir to its appropriate level, turn on your car and let it idle for three to five minutes.
  10. Turn your car back off and check your transmission fluid level. If necessary, add more fluid.
