How do you change a starter on a ‘98 Toyota 4Runner?

My engine has been having a hard time starting recently and I’m certain there’s a problem with my starter. I want to change it myself, but it’s a bit of an older model. How can I change the starter on my ‘98 Toyota 4Runner?

Changing the starter on a ‘98
Toyota 4Runner
is actually pretty straightforward once you know how! Here’s what to do:
  • Open the hood
of your 4Runner and remove the retaining bolt from the negative battery cable. Set aside the battery cable and position your car on jack stands
  • Find the starter motor on the passenger side of the engine and remove the starter’s electrical contacts
  • Remove the second connector’s retaining bolt and wire from the stud
  • Remove the two starter mounting bolts while supporting the starter, then lower and remove the starter
  • Thread the mounting bolts into the new starter through the transmission side of the bell housing
  • Tighten the two mounting bolts and attach the starter wiring harness connectors. Slide the wiring connector into the starter connector until they lock together
  • Install the second wire’s ring connector on the stud, then tighten the retaining nut to 70 lb-in
  • Lower your car from the jack stands
  • Tighten the retaining bolt on the cable end with a wrench
And you’re done! It’s not the most complicated car
maintenance
you can do, but it’s definitely best to consult a professional if you don’t have much experience working on your car.
