How do you change a BMW X3 car key battery?

I’ve noticed the range on my BMW X3 car key has gotten smaller and smaller the last few weeks and that generally means one thing: it’s time to change the battery. How do I do it?

The frustration of a dying key fob is all too familiar!
How to change the battery depends on what type of key you have. A
BMX X3
has two options: comfort access or sleek slant shape.
To change the battery for the comfort access key, do the following:
  • Locate the small tab in the key fob and press it. This is where the valet key is.
  • Take out the valet key and locate the small access port.
  • Remove the battery cover with the valet key or a small flathead screwdriver.
  • Now you can replace the dead battery with a new one.
  • Repeat the steps in reverse order to reassemble your key.
For the sleek slant shape key, you’ll need a CR2032 battery. To replace it:
  • Remove the valet key by pressing the button that opens it.
  • Where the valet key was, locate a small groove.
  • Turn the groove clockwise using the valet key.
  • Remove the battery cover and replace the dead battery.
  • Repeat the steps in reverse order to reassemble your key.
