Unfortunately, in 48 of 50 US states, it is illegal to drive a car without
auto insurance
, even if you’re just going home from the dealership. It is not advisable to buy a car without auto insurance.
If you get into an accident, you will be fully responsible for paying any damages caused while driving without insurance. Damages incurred while driving without insurance can be extremely costly. Even if you are not at fault, non-insurance holder penalties––if you’re apprehended by law enforcement––could range anywhere from $25 to $5,000 on top of what you owe to the other driver.
In most states, it is also common to
suspend your driver’s license
for driving without insurance.
That said, a dealer might not force you to have car insurance at the time of your purchase, but it’s risky business even leaving the lot with an uninsured car. If finances are the reason you would consider driving uninsured, consider getting a
liability-only
policy or otherwise opting for minimum coverage.
