I love driving and teaching, so I’m planning to become a driving instructor in Wisconsin. What are the steps I need to take to be qualified as one?

Being a driving instructor is such a fulfilling job! To become a driving instructor in Wisconsin, you must be 19 years of age or older. You will also need to first be employed by a driver training school, have the appropriate training, and pass all required tests.
Below is a more detailed account of the requirements to become a Class D driver training school instructor:
  • Be employed by a driving training school and complete a 40-hour instructor training course, be DPI certified, or have 9 college credits of driver education
  • Hold a valid driver’s license for the training you will provide with two years of driving experience
  • Have a good driving record
  • Pass all required tests—instructor test, Class D knowledge test, highway signs test, oral test, brake reaction test, and road test
After meeting all the requirements, you will need to mail a completed driver instructor application to the Department of Transportation with a $50 payment for 24 months.
Once you’ve successfully become an instructor, your driving school will have to add you to their
