How do you appeal a driving ban?

I know rules vary between states, so I live in California for reference. Last week, I ran a red light because of an emergency, and my license got suspended. Now I’m not supposed to drive for a year! Is there any way to appeal a driving ban?

License suspensions can be frustrating—especially when they feel undeserved. Luckily,
California
state law dictates that you can appeal a driving ban by requesting an administrative hearing within 10 days of being notified of your license suspension.
At the hearing, you can appeal your driving ban on your own or with a lawyer. An administrative hearing will typically include the following:
  • Evidence from the DMV supporting their decision
  • Time to review the provided evidence
  • An opportunity to challenge the decision
Once you’ve presented your arguments, the DMV will review your case and make a final decision. If you still disagree, you can request an administrative review. And if that doesn’t work, you can appeal the decision in a superior court.
Grounds for your license suspension can usually be found in the California Vehicle Code, which is an extensive legal document. That said, you should exercise your right to representation and bring a
lawyer
to the meeting if you can afford it. While it may be pricey, administrative hearings can be challenging to navigate on your own.
