How do you adjust windshield wipers?

The wipers on my Ford Fusion seem crooked and the driver’s side wiper is overshooting the windshield. I’m admittedly a bit Type A and find it really distracting when I drive. Can windshield wipers be adjusted?

Misaligned windshield wipers are indeed a nuisance! They can distract the perfectionist in us while causing added
wear and tear
on our wipers. The good news is it’s actually pretty simple to adjust your windshield wipers.
Your wipers may need adjusting if they are not resting in the typical “park” position, seem crooked, or are moving too far off the windshield.
To adjust your windshield wipers:
  • With your car on, ensure your wipers are in park position. Turn off your car.
  • Remove the plastic cap at the bottom of the wiper arm and use a ratchet to unscrew the nut
  • Remove the wiper arm from the car
  • Locate the wiper markers or park lines on the windshield. These are markings drawn on the glass that indicate where the wiper should sit when parked.
  • Reinstall the wiper, ensuring the blade rests as it should on the markers.
  • Start your car and test the wipers. Readjust as needed.
Wiper misalignment can happen naturally over time. Always avoid sweeping thick
snow or ice off your windshield
with wipers before clearing it manually, as the resistance can put your wipers out of alignment.
Also, consider whether your insurance is aligned with your budget.
