How do you add rental cars to your insurance?

How can I add a rental car to my insurance policy? My last car was in a bad accident, so I'm driving a rental until it gets fixed. I'd like to make sure my policy covers it.

Having the right coverage while renting a car is important! While you can’t add rental cars to your
car insurance
policy, you can buy rental insurance that covers rental cars.
To look at your coverage options, you should take these two steps:
  • Ask the rental agency about their insurance policies. Most rental cars will already come with a level of insurance. Though the coverage may be limited, it’s worth checking to see if it meets your needs. * Check your policy for any rental coverage. Some insurance policies may already include some level of rental coverage. Before you buy more, call your provider and ask if you’re already covered.
If you plan on renting the car for a long time, you should consider springing for the extra
rental coverage
. More often than not, preexisting rental policies won’t offer the kind of protection you’ll need for long-term rentals. Plus, it may be better to pay a bit of a higher monthly rate than be responsible for overages in the case of an accident.
