How do you add coolant to a 2013 BMW 328I?

The temperature gauge in my BMW 328I has been running pretty hot for the last two weeks. I spoke to my dad about it on the phone and he said that I may need to add more coolant, but that isn’t something I’ve ever done before. How can I add coolant to my 2013 BMW 328I?

If you’re having issues with your engine temperature, adding coolant is the best place to start. Since you’ve never tried this before, you’ll want to take proper precautions and collect all necessary items before getting started, including:
  • Wear safety goggles and gloves
  • Work in a well-ventilated area
  • Purchase a bottle of coolant based on your manual’s specifications
  • Get a funnel
Once you have these items and you are properly protected, you can add coolant to your 2013
BMW 328I
by following these steps:
  1. Pop your hood
and find the coolant tank. Make sure your car is cool and has not been recently driven.
  2. Press down and turn the cap to release it.
  3. You should see a brightly colored level float sticking out of the reservoir. Compare this with the diagram indicating the level float’s position when the tank is properly filled.
  4. Place the funnel in the tank opening but leave space to see the level float as you fill.
  5. Begin pouring in coolant until the float reaches the proper height as indicated by the diagram.
  6. Remove the funnel carefully and replace the cap.
Now that the coolant levels in your BMW have been topped up, you should see a change in the temperature gauge. If this doesn’t help, you may need to take your car to a mechanic to investigate further issues.
