How do wheel bearings work?

I’ve heard of wheel bearings before, but I don’t really understand what they are. Are they important? How do wheel bearings work?

Wheel bearings are very important! Wheel bearings are part of the wheel hub and are designed to reduce as much friction as possible as the wheels of your car spin.
The bearing itself is a set of small, metal balls that are placed between two small, metal rings. They fit inside the wheel hub and ride on an axle shaft, reducing friction as the wheel spins. The wheel bearings are also lubricated to further reduce friction.
