How do used car warranties work?
I just got a new-to-me car. A friend said I should look into a used car warranty, but I’m unsure where to start. What’s a used car warranty and how would I get one?

Most used car warranties cover a minimum of all internally lubricated parts of the engine and transmission. Some may cover other issues; others may not. The coverage will depend on the age or mileage of the car. Typically, the older the car is, the less coverage it will qualify for.
Higher mileage warranties, for example, don’t cover sensors, electrical components, or things attached to the engine, like fuel pumps, starters, alternators, etc.
Prices for pre-owned cars are usually based on age, condition, and usable life, and their warranties are priced based on the same factors.
You can purchase a used car warranty at most reputable dealerships when you buy your car. The warranty may be backed by the dealer itself or by a large national company. Depending on the type of warranty, covered repairs may need to be done at that specific dealership—ask your dealer for details.
