How do I use my own insurance when renting a car?

I am flying to visit family and planning to rent a car to get around. Can I use my own insurance or do I have to get rental insurance?

“Your
car insurance
might provide coverage for rental cars. You can call your insurance before leaving for your trip to find out.
If your car insurance will extend coverage to a rental car, be sure you have the proper protection. Should you only have
liability coverage
on your policy, you’ll still need damage coverage for the rental car.
You can either get this coverage directly from the rental car company or check your credit card benefits. Most credit cards offer a collision damage waiver as a card benefit if you pay for the rental with your card.
