How do I use a vacuum pump on a car AC?

What do I do when using a vacuum pump to recharge my car’s AC system? I have all the equipment, I just haven’t used it and I’m not sure how to do it.

Using a vacuum pump on a car AC is surprisingly easy. Here are the steps you’ll need to follow to use a vacuum pump on your car’s AC unit:
  • Turn off your engine and the AC.
  • Open your hood
    and start preparing your pump.
  • Attach the pump hose to the low-pressure port of the refrigerant gauge.
  • Screw the AC vacuum pump to the middle valve of the refrigerant gauge manifold set and wait for it to reach 27 Hg. This should take at least 30 minutes.
  • When your pump has reached 27 Hg, close the valve that goes to the gauge and turn off the pump.
  • Let the pump sit for 30 minutes, then check to see if the vacuum is still at 27 Hg. If your level has fallen, this means that your system has a leak and you should repair it before continuing.
  • If you’re still at 27 Hg, disconnect the pump hose from the pump and attach a can of refrigerant.
  • Start your car and turn on the AC.
  • Slowly open the low-pressure manifold and let the refrigerant flow into the AC system.
While you wait for your pump to reach the proper level, why not take a minute to save on your car insurance? It’s easy when you use
