How do I temporarily pause my car insurance?

I’m traveling internationally for business and won't be taking my vehicle. When I return, I’d like my car insurance policy to pick up where I left off. Can I pause my liability coverage temporarily instead of canceling it?

You've got a busy schedule ahead of you, so let's not waste time! Because almost every state requires drivers to carry
liability coverage
at all times, most insurance providers don’t allow customers to pause their car insurance policy.
We also don’t recommend canceling liability coverage.
A lapse can cause your insurance rates to soar
, which is a terrible homecoming surprise!
Instead, ask your auto insurance company if you can:
  • Suspend coverage for the duration of your trip. There’s no harm in asking, right?
  • Temporarily reduce your coverage limits. You’ll pay the lowest rate possible for minimum liability coverage.
  • Cancel additional coverage on your vehicle. You’ll save money by eliminating extra coverage options, like collision coverage.
  • Be removed from the insurance policy. If you share liability with coverage with someone, they might be able to take on the policy solo for a little while.
  • Arrange a payment plan. Spreading your overdue payments over the rest of the year will reduce the financial burden of maintaining a policy you don’t use.
Hopefully, these tips will relieve the financial stress so you can focus on traveling. Have a great trip!
