How do I switch cars on my insurance?

I recently sold my car to a friend and I am purchasing another vehicle. I want to keep the same coverage on my new car that I previously had. How do I switch my cars?

“Switching cars on your
car insurance
policy is a relatively easy task. To do so, call your insurance company or use your insurer’s app or website.
Since you want to keep the same coverage, let your provider know you sold your car and you’re purchasing a new one. The only additional information they should need is the new VIN (vehicle identification number). You can obtain this from the current owner or dealership.
The good news is that since you have an active car insurance policy, your coverage automatically extends to your new car. Most insurance companies extend coverage to new vehicles for a specific period. This is usually 14 to 30 days, but the grace period may vary depending on the insurer.
While you should add your new vehicle to your policy as soon as possible, you have a bit of wiggle room.
Since car insurance rates vary depending on the vehicle you have, shop around after adding your new car. Do this online or with
