How do I stop panic attacks while driving?

I have a panic disorder, which means I suffer occasional panic attacks. I’m already anxious about driving, but the prospect of having a panic attack while I’m behind the wheel is making it worse. Is there any way to stop a panic attack while driving?

As someone who has suffered from a panic disorder, I absolutely empathize. Unfortunately, there is no way to stop a panic attack while driving, any more than there is a way to stop one when you’re not. So if you’re nervous about suffering one on the road, be sure you know your signs:
  • Do you get shortness of breath?
  • Does your heart rate accelerate?
  • Do you feel dizzy or faint?
If you’re aware of what symptoms precede a panic attack, you’ll know to act if you experience them on the road, and that sort of awareness can actually help keep the anxiety that causes panic attacks at bay.
Here are some other tips I’ve learned:
  • Stay in the right-hand lane while driving so that when the signs start to show, you can pull over quickly and
    safely
    .
  • Use whatever coping skills have worked for you in the past, like focusing on your breathing and self-talk.
  • Make sure that you’re back to a safe state of mind before continuing on your journey.
The anxiety disorder that causes panic attacks can be treated with medication and therapy, but that’s at your discretion, of course. But peace of mind can also go a long way towards keeping panic attacks at bay. And the security of having the right
