How do I stay safe when driving on country roads?

I got a great deal on a rural log cabin with 20 acres of land, so I’m moving out of the city. I’ve never lived in a rural area before, but I hear that driving is tricky. How can I stay safe when I’m driving on country roads?

Congratulations on the new purchase and the next chapter in your life! Staying safe while driving on country roads takes some practice.
If you apply the following tips, you should feel a bit more secure:
  • Obey posted speed limit signs. If you don’t see a posted sign, the speed limit on rural highways is usually 55 mph, but you should often stay below this.
  • Keep a watchful eye out for ATVs, dirt bikes, and farm equipment.
  • Check for wildlife, especially at night. This is another good reason to not drive too fast.
  • Always use extra caution when passing.
  • Use your high beams appropriately.
  • Watch out for uncontrolled intersections and hidden driveways.
Whether you’re moving to a new state or area, it’s the perfect time to also review your
car insurance
policy.
