How do I show proof of car insurance?

I got pulled over the other day and the officer asked for proof of insurance. I had no idea what that was and they gave me a ticket. I have insurance, but how would I show proof?

“Since almost every state requires
car insurance
, police officers always ask for your registration and
proof of insurance
. The good news is that since you have insurance, you should be able to get the ticket dismissed or reduced.
You can show proof of insurance in several different ways depending on where you live. Some states allow electronic ID cards like those in an email or mobile app. Others require hard copies that your insurance will mail or you printed out at home.
Proof of insurance is also found on your
policy declaration page
or any official document that lists your:
  • Name
  • Vehicle
  • Policy number
  • Effective dates
Since you have insurance, you can bring any of those documents with you to show the court. They should hopefully dismiss your ticket.
As you look into your insurance, consider shopping around. Car insurance rates vary, so it never hurts to review your options. You can look at quotes online or use an app like
