How do I set a Tesla in neutral?

I’m so excited that I finally got the Tesla of my dreams but I want to keep it looking awesome. This may sound stupid, but how do I put it in neutral to run it through one of those automated car washes?

Congrats on your new
Tesla
—and that’s not a stupid question at all! There’s a lot to learn with eclectic cars, and how to put a Tesla in neutral is just one of those things.
  • For a pre-2021
    Model S
    or
    X
, neutral is between Drive and Reverse on the gear stalk, so just push the gear stalk up if you’re in Drive or down if you’re in Reverse to find neutral.
  • For a pre-2021
    Model 3
    or
    Y
, push up on the gear stalk as you would to engage Drive, but hold it up for one second. Once you see it shift to neutral, you’re all set.
  • For any Tesla built after 2021, just tap the car icon on your infotainment screen, select controls, then tap and hold the Neutral button.
To disengage neutral, press the brake pedal and shift into Drive or Reverse like normal.
As long as you’re doing everything you can to keep your Tesla as good as new, why not take a minute to make sure you’ve got it protected with the best
