How do I see if a car is insured?

I'm sort of panicking. I got into a little accident today, and the other person gave me their phone number and said they would send me their insurance information. I haven't heard from them since! Can I check on their insurance anywhere else?

No need for panic! You can check on their insurance by contacting the police or your local DMV. If you filed a police report after the accident, the police should be able to access the other driver’s insurance information fairly easily.
The DMV also keeps a record of insurance information for all licensed drivers, but this information is protected by privacy laws. You will need to prove that you have a valid reason for making the request by providing:
  • The other car’s license plate number
  • Your contact information
  • A reason for the request
  • Details about the accident
  • A police report (if there is one)
If any of this information is non-verifiable, your request may be denied, so make sure everything is current and accurate.
If you still can’t find the other driver’s insurance information, you should contact your insurer to talk about your next steps.
