How do I see better when driving at night?

I wear contacts, but when I’m driving at night, I often have trouble with depth perception and lights look like starbursts. What can I do to improve my night vision while driving?

Even people with good vision don’t always see well at night, but you have a few options. To see when better when driving at night:
  • Dim your dashboard lights, which can limit distractions.
  • Clean your mirrors and windows to reduce smudges, streaks, and glare.
  • Don’t look directly into oncoming headlights.
  • Use your high beams when appropriate (no other cars are around).
  • Drive slowly.
  • Use the dimming feature on your rearview mirror.
  • Make sure your windshield wipers are in good shape and that you have plenty of windshield wiper fluid.
